High Holidays

5785

The High Holidays are a time that calls for renewal and rededication.

We engage in chesbon nefesh, an accounting of our souls, to review our year, check in on our emotional selves, and take stock of the connections we've made—with ourselves, with others, and with G-d. We note those places where we have inevitably fallen short and missed the mark, and we rededicate ourselves to those things that truly matter in our lives. This year, we delve deep into the idea of rededication, exploring how we might live lives truly in line with our values.

One year after the attacks on October 7th, we find ourselves in a changed world. A "commemoration" to mark this horrific anniversary feels wholly inadequate, since trauma of that day is still ongoing. Hostages are still being held captive by Hamas, while the war claims innocent lives and the rancorous discourse in our country and our community grows ever more inflamed. How can we begin the healing process when the wounds are still being inflicted? How can we combat the sense of despair, isolation, and frustration? Only as a community can we begin to heal and only under the banner of hope. In the words of the indominable and inspirational Rachel Goldberg Polin, "Hope Is Mandatory".

Join us at the JCA or at any participating partner location, for a Statewide evening of remembrance, reflection, and hope. This program will feature songs, poetry, prayers, a candlelight vigil, and testimony from all across the State of Maine. We are especially honored to have keynote speaker Keren Borovsky Oren, an Israeli survivor from Kibbutz Re'im, join us to share her experiences from that terrible day and beyond, but also share what gives her hope for the future. Let us come together, as one people, to usher in hope, healing, and ultimately, peace.

This event is free, but advance registration is required. We will check ID before entry. Doors open at 5 PM. A kosher Israeli-style community dinner will be served at the JCA from 5-6:30 PM, featuring the favorite dishes of hostages and missing persons from the cookbook Shavuot of Longing. The program will run from 6:30-7:45 PM. Childcare will be provided at the JCA for children ages 2-11 from 6:30-8 PM.

If you can't make it to Portland, you can still participate in this program in-person at the following partner locations: Temple Shalom (Auburn)Temple Beth El (Augusta)Congregation Beth Israel (Bath)Beth Israel Congregation (Waterville), and Adas Yoshuron (Rockland).
