High Holidays
5785
The High Holidays are a time that calls for renewal and rededication.
We engage in chesbon nefesh, an accounting of our souls, to review our year, check in on our emotional selves, and take stock of the connections we've made—with ourselves, with others, and with G-d. We note those places where we have inevitably fallen short and missed the mark, and we rededicate ourselves to those things that truly matter in our lives. This year, we delve deep into the idea of rededication, exploring how we might live lives truly in line with our values.

Daily Elul Thoughts
Do your introspection at your convenience. Each day, at Temple Beth El, Rabbi Estrin will email a thought for the day. Yizkor
Dear Friends,
We recite the Yizkor prayers on Yom Kippur and on the last day of each of the three Festivals: Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. We take a moment to reflect, remember, and connect with our loved ones. And we ask G‑d, too, to remember the souls of family and friends who have passed away.
But we cannot suffice with memory alone, because memory, by definition, relegates the remembered entity to the past. And we must endeavor to keep our loved ones’ legacies alive and present. They must be our inspiration, ever-present in our day-to-day life. As such, we continue to live in the company of their spirits, and they, in the World of Truth, live with us.
We remember. We are inspired. And we pledge to do good in the merit of their souls. For this reason, the Yizkor service includes a pledge to tzedakah, charity, on behalf of the deceased’s souls.
It is customary to fufill the mitzvah of remembering your loved ones and giving tzedakah in their merit. Your charity will go toward building the local Jewish community in Portland. All names will be mentioned at the Yizkor service.

Simchat Torah Celebration
Thursday, October 24
At Chabad of Maine
This Shemini Atzeret marks one year since the tragic October 7th attack on Israel.
Join us as we unveil a special Memorial Bimah Cover, honoring the 1,200 holy souls lost. The Bimah, from which our prayers ascend, will now serve as a tribute to their memory.
At its center are the powerful words from Devarim:
הַרְנִ֤ינוּ גוֹיִם֙ עַמּ֔וֹ כִּ֥י דַם־עֲבָדָ֖יו יִקּ֑וֹם...
"O nations, sing the praises of His people, for He will avenge the blood of His servants..."
On Simchat Torah, a day of joy, we will transition from grief to celebration. We will dance for those who cannot, and unveil a new artistic Torah cover, representing the transformation of darkness into light.
Let us cry, dance, and honor those lost. Am Yisrael Chai – The people of Israel live. Together, we rise from sorrow into strength

Elul Z'man Workshop
Sunday, September 8, 15, and 22 | 6:30 p.m. | In-person and on Zoom
Elul is the month before the Yamin Noraim (Days of Awe), which we affectionately call the High Holidays. We traditionally make time during this period for self-work (introspection and self-evaluation). This work is called cheshbon nefesh, an accounting of our soul. Please join Rabbi Lorin at Adas Yoshuron or on Zoom for a three-part class/discussion to help us engage in cheshbon nefesh. We will (1) rethink how to make the High Holidays meaningful to each of us, (2) explore the concepts and practices of teshuva (repentance/returning) and (3) situate Elul and the High Holidays in the larger context of our participation in the Jewish community throughout the year. There will be an optional dinner at 6:00 p.m. for those joining in person. Each session can stand alone, but each in the series will build from the previous one. Readings will be available one week prior to each class. (Links will be in the weekly emails.) Each session will also include an opportunity to learn some songs and prayers from the High Holiday liturgy. Please RSVP for 6:00 p.m. light dinner by the preceding Thursday

One year after the attacks on October 7th, we find ourselves in a changed world. A "commemoration" to mark this horrific anniversary feels wholly inadequate, since trauma of that day is still ongoing. Hostages are still being held captive by Hamas, while the war claims innocent lives and the rancorous discourse in our country and our community grows ever more inflamed. How can we begin the healing process when the wounds are still being inflicted? How can we combat the sense of despair, isolation, and frustration? Only as a community can we begin to heal and only under the banner of hope. In the words of the indominable and inspirational Rachel Goldberg Polin, "Hope Is Mandatory".
Join us at the JCA or at any participating partner location, for a Statewide evening of remembrance, reflection, and hope. This program will feature songs, poetry, prayers, a candlelight vigil, and testimony from all across the State of Maine. We are especially honored to have keynote speaker Keren Borovsky Oren, an Israeli survivor from Kibbutz Re'im, join us to share her experiences from that terrible day and beyond, but also share what gives her hope for the future. Let us come together, as one people, to usher in hope, healing, and ultimately, peace.
This event is free, but advance registration is required. We will check ID before entry. Doors open at 5 PM. A kosher Israeli-style community dinner will be served at the JCA from 5-6:30 PM, featuring the favorite dishes of hostages and missing persons from the cookbook Shavuot of Longing. The program will run from 6:30-7:45 PM. Childcare will be provided at the JCA for children ages 2-11 from 6:30-8 PM.
If you can't make it to Portland, you can still participate in this program in-person at the following partner locations: Temple Shalom (Auburn), Temple Beth El (Augusta), Congregation Beth Israel (Bath), Beth Israel Congregation (Waterville), and Adas Yoshuron (Rockland). Please click on the links above for more information about how to register for this program at any given location. This program is also supported by Congregation Bet Ha'am (South Portland), Temple Beth El (Portland), and Etz Chaim Synagogue (Portland) and Chabad of Maine.
